Types of sedation used in Dentistry at Danville Family Dentist

Different types of sedation are used in a variety of medical and dental procedures but the choice of method depends on the duration of procedure, tolerance of patient, and the ease of induction. The commonly used sedations in dentistry include:

  • Inhaled minimal sedation: laughing gas or nitrous oxide is inhaled along with oxygen by means of a nasal mask. The dentist will decide the amount and duration of sedation required as it wears off quickly. This will make you feel relaxed, and you are fully conscious after the dental procedure is completed.

  • Oral sedation: if minimal to moderate sedation is required, this can be achieved by an oral pill taken half an hour before the procedure. It can make the patient drowsy or fall asleep if moderate sedation is required. In the latter case, the patient can be aroused by shaking gently.

  • IV Sedation: in this type, the sedative medication is given via vein, and the level of sedation is moderate.

  • General anesthesia or deep sedation: this is the deepest level of sedation in which the patient becomes almost unconscious or in a deep sleep. The patient becomes conscious when the effect of the medication wears off or when it is reversed.
